No backing down
By Darren Spence (with apologies to Tom Petty)
Well I won’t back down, no I won’t back down.
You can stand me up at the gates of hell but I won’t back down.
Gonna stand my ground, won’t be turned around
And I’ll keep this world from draggin’ me down
Gonna stand my ground and I won’t back down’

The difference between flower and flour
by Darren Spence It wasn’t pretty on the weekend…..the only thing pretty was the fact that I was able to watch the game in a pool bar enjoying the Lebaran break. No broken bars but plenty of splashing of water. This week I thought I would make use of homophones to brighten the spirits of even the most tragic and disappointed Dees fan.
I would have loved to be a fly on the wall during the match review with the players. Like Clarkson famously poured flour on the ground to signify his line in the sand – Roosy would have undoubtedly ripped into them. Read more

Celebrating Tom Wills’ birthday in Captains Flat
Thomas Wentworth Wills was born on 19 August 1835 near Captains Flat in NSW. He is one of the writers of the original rules of AFL and an early member of the Melbourne Football Club. The home ground of the GWS in Sydney is the Tom Wills Ground and Melbourne plays GWS on Sunday 17 August.
So the Captains Flat Area S355 Committee is celebrating his birthday with a party and the first public showing of the AFL on the cinema screen in the Hall.
When: 3.00 pm on Sunday 17 August
Where: Captains Flat Community Hall
The game commences at 3:20 pm, so the Hall will open at 3:00pm. At half time there will be birthday cake and party games. Post game drinks and meals will be available from both the Hotel and the Club and, if you make prior arrangements, meals from the Outsider Gallery & Café. If you are travelling by car or coach please note there is no fuel at Captains Flat.

Why Sport Matters
Melbourne v Port Adelaide
by Darren Spence
Someone once said ‘the reason why sport matters so much is that it doesn’t matter’…..that person obviously doesn’t follow the Demons. Supporting the Dees can sometimes seriously damage your health. Another 10:00am Sunday Jakarta time start – with me having the breaking strain of a Kit Kat means having a beer in the pub at 10:00am (well you can’t watch the footy without a beer can you?), another close game the Dees have lost, another game with ‘questionable’ umpire decisions (more on that later) and another game where some basic skill errors would cause a priest to swear (more on that later as well). Perhaps an MFC membership should come with cigarette packet like graphic health warnings? I have a few images in my head already – Ted and Angela screaming at the TV in their own unique ways, Sam getting out of his chair and storming off, Michael shaking his head, Sally just with her head in her hands and me – well me – just swearing and banging the table (yes I may have some anger issues but heh who doesn’t after following the Demons for over 40 years!?).
